Now in its 57th year, the annual Nashville Film Festival returns to Music City this week, Sept. 24-30, boasting tons of incredible feature films, documentaries, shorts, world premieres, student films, creator panels, awards, and much more! More modestly sized compared to some of the flashier fests around the nation like Sundance, Tribeca, or SXSW, Nashville’s fest is, nonetheless, vibrant and unique in its own right, and leaning into the city’s musical associations, as well as showcasing tons of Tennessee filmmaking talent, has long been an important component.
From the opening night presentation of a documentary about Peter Frampton, to a special screening of Sian Heder’s follow-up to Best Picture winner CODA, Being Heumann, on closing night, plus docs about fascinating international music scenes, unlikely successes, grief, the politics of hemp farming, cultural landmarks, local student film programs, queer visibility, Nashville’s complicated racial history, the contempoary Christian music scene, an intimate side of Mumford & Sons, plus narrative features in music, horror, drama, western, crime, and comedy, shorts and student features, music video presentations, and so much more, this year’s fest has lots of great musical programming and works from Tennessee talent.
We’ve combed through the whole schedule, and while there are plenty of great national features that caught our eye (Breeder, Compliance, Crooks, Crystal Cross, The Haunting of Pennhurst, Hot Water, The Incomer, Jackrabbit, Lady, The Leader, Love of Your Life, Take Me Home, A Talent for Murder, Tender Loving Care, Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother), we wanted to give you a rundown of the 25 music documentaries and features, and works from local and regional directors on the schedule!
Tickets are available both individually (mostly for $18) and through VIP badges, and while some events are sold out (we’ve marked them at the time of writing), most still have availability (you can scroll down to the bottom of the page for a full list of films, with ticket links). While we’re primarily focusing on the film slate, there’s also a fantastic Creators Conference, with panels running throughout the week for badgeholders, primarily geared towards filmmakers and those looking to glean more industry insight, but many with musical themes as well. Many screenings also include Q&As from filmmakers, cast, and crew, and we’ve marked those where applicable.
FRAMPTON
Thursday, Sept. 24 | 6pm & 6:15pm | Regal Green Hills (SOLD OUT)
MUSIC DOCUMENTARY FEATURE
“From the explosive heights of Frampton Comes Alive! to the quiet introspection of his final tour, Frampton is an intimate portrait of a rock icon who soared, stumbled, and rose again. This feature documentary traces Peter Frampton’s extraordinary life and career — from his meteoric rise in the 1970s that made him a global sensation, through the turbulent years that tested his artistry, identity, and resilience. As the roar of stadium crowds faded, Frampton faced the daunting task of rebuilding — reinventing his sound and rediscovering his purpose across solo projects, collaborations, and relentless touring. Behind the stage lights, personal sacrifices and fractured family ties reveal the cost of fame that few ever see. Now, diagnosed with Inclusion Body Myositis, a degenerative muscle condition threatening his ability to play guitar, Frampton stands at a profound crossroads. Frampton captures the soulful poignancy of an artist confronting both the passage of time and his own physical limits, determined to make every performance count. Through rare archival footage, candid interviews, and electrifying concert moments, this documentary explores the spirit of a musician who defined an era, lost everything, and fought his way back — only to discover that his greatest encore might not be on stage, but in the time he’s reclaiming with the people he loves most. Frampton is a stirring celebration of artistry, endurance, and the enduring power of music to outlast even the hands that play it.”
Peter Frampton and director Rob Arthur will be in attendance for a Q&A following the 6 p.m. screening. The 6:15 p.m. screening will include an introduction from Frampton and Arthur.

MUSIC DOCUMENTARY FEATURE
“Jail Time Records is a documentary musical that follows recording artists emerging from one of the world’s toughest settings. SUMMER 2000: THE X-CETRA STORY
Friday, Sept. 25 | 2:30pm | Regal Green Hills
MUSIC DOCUMENTARY FEATURE
“In the summer of 2000, four pre-teen friends formed a band called X-Cetra and burned a homemade album onto a few CD-Rs. The following year, consumed by adolescent concerns of boys and growing up, their labor of love was quickly forgotten… Until 20 years later, when someone uploaded it online. At first it garnered a small base of outsider-art fans, but soon it was discovered by record labels, sampled by mainstream artists, and eventually the subject of a Rolling Stone profile. With their teen dreams of pop stardom coming true decades later, X-Cetra reunites to see if they can rekindle the unselfconscious girlhood they’d captured in the album those many years ago.”

WHERE THE HELL IS ANNA?
Friday, Sept. 25 | 4pm | Regal Green Hills (SOLD OUT)
TENNESSEE FEATURE – HORROR/THRILLER | WORLD PREMIERE
“When her estranged best friend Anna mysteriously vanishes into a women-only retreat in the woods, messy and heartbroken Derick crashes the culty pagan commune determined to bring her home. But the longer she stays, the harder it gets to tell who’s healing and who’s brainwashed. As the Summer Solstice nears and Anna is chosen for a “ceremony” called Induction Day, Derick uncovers disturbing secrets buried beneath the flower crowns and sisterhood mantras, including blood rituals, fertility experiments, and the looming promise of paradise known as Summerland.
Equal parts Midsommar, Bodies Bodies Bodies, and Booksmart, Where the Hell is Anna? is a genre-blending supernatural thriller with a comedic twist about female friendship, cult psychology, and the terrifying mess of trying to save someone who might not want to be saved.”

THE MAN WITH THE BIG HAT
Friday, Sept. 25 | 6pm | Regal Green Hills
MUSIC DOCUMENTARY FEATURE
“An unsung pioneer of 1970s Texas Progressive Country, Steven Fromholz had a knack for snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. Revered by legends like Willie Nelson, Lyle Lovett & John Denver, he remained commercially unknown. He sought redemption on the Rio Grande as a river guide until a debilitating stroke erased his musical memory, stripping Fromholz of his artistic identity. Through newly discovered archives that include never-before-heard recordings, this intimate excavation of sorts is driven by an obsessive persistence, that brings Fromholz back to life, and reshapes the notion of success and artistic fortitude.”

SARA BAREILLES: GOOD GRIEF
Saturday, Sept. 26 | 2:00pm | Regal Green Hills (SOLD OUT)
MUSIC DOCUMENTARY FEATURE
“For the first time in seven years, Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Sara Bareilles returns to the studio with close friends to begin recording her most intimate album yet, born of profound personal loss and grief. Internationally known for pop anthems like “Love Song” and “Brave,” this cinematic portrait observes the most private corners of Sara’s creative process, as well as her personal life. What unfolds in front of the camera is the incredibly raw experience of mining one’s own pain to create art—and the hope that carries an artist forward: that sharing what is broken in oneself might ultimately bring us closer to healing and repair.”
Director Josh Alexander will be in attendance for a Q&A following the screening.
ONE PLANT
Saturday, Sept. 26 | 2:00pm | Regal Green Hills
TENNESSEE DOCUMENTARY FEATURE | WORLD PREMIERE
“After losing his mother to alcohol and opioid addiction, filmmaker and hemp farmer, Jordan is left searching for answers. Frustrated by a medical system that seemed to fall short, he turns to a long stigmatized and misunderstood plant, wondering if it might have offered a different path. What begins as a personal search quickly evolves into something much larger. Setting out with a camera, he travels across the country, meeting farmers, scientists, doctors, builders, and entrepreneurs working to reintroduce hemp as a valuable resource for food, medicine, materials, and agriculture. Along the way, ONE PLANT reveals a complex and often overlooked story, one that challenges long held assumptions and explores how this single plant intersects with some of today’s most pressing issues, from climate change and health to sustainability and the systems that shape how we live. ONE PLANT is a story of loss and rediscovery, asking not just what this plant can do, but what it might mean if we continue to overlook it.”

THE LORRAINE
Saturday, Sept. 26 | 2:30pm | National Museum of African American Music
TENNESSEE DOCUMENTARY FEATURE
“In the heart of Memphis, Walter and Loree Bailey’s Lorraine Motel was both a thriving hub of Black entrepreneurship and a destination for the greatest musicians of the 20th century—a place where Civil Rights demonstrations were planned, musical hits were written, and Black and white artists created history together. A rare, black-owned establishment, The Lorraine served as a safe haven and sanctuary for Black travelers during the Jim Crow era. Then, on April 4, 1968, the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. outside Room 306 cleaved that history in two, and the world forgot everything else.
Urgent yet deeply joyful, THE LORRAINE is both a reckoning with the Civil Rights Movement’s unfinished legacy and a celebration of Black excellence and resilience. Renowned documentarian Sam Pollard uses archival footage and music along with the voices of those who lived it to vividly revive what was lost. The film ultimately becomes a story of reclamation: of people, space, history, and identity. Of transforming trauma into light.
THE LORRAINE reminds us that history is never as neatly resolved as we’re taught to believe, and that the fight for justice is still very much evolving.”
The film will be followed by an extended discussion with director, Sam Pollard and producer, Alvin D. Hall. The conversation will be moderated by Dr. James B. Pratt.

The Tennessee Governor’s School for the Arts drops them straight into the deep end and asks them to swim. What begins as a crash course in cameras and craft quietly becomes something more personal. On the precipice of the rest of their lives, these kids navigate disagreement, impostor syndrome, and self-worth in this coming-of-age film that’s a must-see for anyone with the creative urge.”

TENNESSEE FEATURE – HORROR/THRILLER | WORLD PREMIERE
“Rebecca Novak is a mirror of herself. Smart, ambitious, and disciplined, she has perfected the art of reflection — giving the world exactly what it wants to see. At Lhush Marketing, a secretive firm that edits celebrity lives into flawless public mythologies, Rebecca is a sharp junior associate obsessed with achieving perfection for herself and her clients. When reclusive billionaire Gemini Dillinger unexpectedly chooses her to lead the campaign for a women’s lifestyle empire built on beauty, wellness, and reinvention, Becca’s dreams finally come true. And so do her nightmares.
As her career peaks, her body becomes a haunted house: a locked room with something alive inside it. Grief from her recently deceased mother, a promising new romance, and a workplace promotion all heightens the stakes, while a grotesque clown starts appearing at the edges of her life like a warning she refuses to see.
Trapped between outward success and inward detonation, Becca can no longer maintain the facade she has so beautifully built. Her physical body becomes a reckoning, and the only way to survive is to look in the mirror and shed the woman she was taught to be.
SHED is a sensual psychological body-horror fable about trauma, grief, the female experience, and the monstrous cost of becoming whole.”

STEADFAST & TRUE: THE SEARCY STORY
Sunday, Sept. 27 | 12pm | National Museum of African American Music
TENNESSEE STUDENT DOCUMENTARY FEATURE | WORLD PREMIERE
“They have made Nashville their home despite the blatant, harsh realities of deep rooted racism and its cruel impact. Rather than take the easy way, they carved a path of lifetime activism. Nashville (aka Music City), is best known as the capitol for country music. But what is not as well known, is its history of racism, segregation and ability to divert attention away from the racial issues. However, none of this was lost on the Searcy’s.
Joyce and Walter arrived in Nashville in the 1970’s attended HBC Fisk University and both excelled academically. But more importantly, they devoted much of their skills and energy as they lived out the John Lewis motto – Good Trouble.
Steadfast & True is the story of a remarkable couple who ‘under the radar’ contributed to vast amount of ‘change’ in Nashville and why we are better if we acknowledge and understand what they contributed.”

SAFE FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY: HOW TO MAKE A CHRISTIAN SUPERSTAR
Sunday, Sept. 27 | 7:30pm | Regal Green Hills (SOLD OUT)
MUSIC DOCUMENTARY FEATURE | WORLD PREMIERE
“SAFE FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY: HOW TO MAKE A CHRISTIAN SUPERSTAR examines the rise of CCM from a faith-based subgenre into a billion-dollar cultural force, and the personal cost paid by many of the artists at the center of it.
The documentary follows three of CCM’s most recognizable voices as they revisit the industry that launched and, in many cases, rejected them. Through first-hand accounts from Jennifer Knapp, Michael Passons (Avalon), and Nikki Leonti, the film explores how artists operating inside the Christian music system were often expected to embody strict evangelical ideals both onstage and off.
The documentary features interviews with a cross-generational lineup of influential CCM and faith-adjacent artists, including Leigh Nash (Sixpence None The Richer), Matt Thiessen (Relient K), Crystal Lewis, Derek Webb (Caedmon’s Call), Nate Cole (Plus One), Chanel Haynes (Trin-i-Tee 5:7), and Semler. Together, their stories trace the complicated legacy of an industry that helped define evangelical culture at the turn of the millennium.
Arriving at a moment when conversations surrounding religion, identity, politics and institutional accountability continue to intensify across American culture, Safe for the Whole Family reframes CCM not as a niche genre, but as a revealing case study on the intersection of belief, celebrity, and commerce.”

MUMFORD & SONS: THE HOUSE BAND
Wednesday, Sept. 30 | 12pm | The Belcourt Theatre
MUSIC DOCUMENTARY FEATURE
“In 2025, after multiple tours and multi-platinum record sales, Mumford and Sons found themselves missing the early days playing music in a community, and wanted to recapture the joy and spontaneity of collaboration. So, they invited 18 of their favorite musicians to board a vintage train in New Orleans and play a very unconventional tour.
The rules were simple: everyone was invited to collaborate with whomever they wished, and anyone could suggest a song. These musicians, many of whom had never met, were to be a real band. Their goal was to create some truly once-in-a-lifetime performances along the way.
In each city there would be one special guest, so the band had to learn new songs on the train each day well enough to play with the likes of Lainey Wilson, Darius Rucker, Maggie Rogers and Noah Kahan.
It soon becomes clear how much work this is, and how every musician on the train has to confront their own fears and limits, playing songs they have never heard before. Can they bond together and help each other reach a common goal? Or will fatigue and doubt tear them apart? These are the stakes every night, and watching how each musician handles this pressure becomes a fascinating watch. Through their experiences, we get an understanding of what it is actually like to be in a band. Self-doubt, joy, insecurity, desire, and commitment are all on display as these musicians put it all on the line for each other.”
