Reunited Indie Rockers Rilo Kiley Play First Nashville Show in 20 Years, Tonight, Sept. 23 at The Pinnacle with The Faint

One of the most essential (if slightly under appreciated) indie groups of the 2000s, LA’s Rilo Kiley have reunited after a 12-year split, and are back on the road for the first time in 17 years, set to play Nashville tonight, Sept. 23 at The Pinnacle with Omaha indie and dance-punk outfit The Faint (Rilo Kiley last played Nashville way back in 2005, at the former Starwood Amphitheatre in support of Coldplay).

Formed in 1998 in Los Angeles, where singer Jenny Lewis and guitarist Blake Sennett both had successful careers as child actors (bassist Pierre de Reeder and drummer Jason Boesel, who joined a few years later, round out the lineup), the band released an eponymous debut EP in 1999, before singing with Barsuk Records ahead of debut full-length, Take Offs and Landings, in 2001. Exemplifying the indie rock and indie pop sound sound of the late ’90s and early ’00s, with elements of folk and even a dash of midwest emo, Rilo Kiley switched to buzzy label Saddle Creek ahead of their 2002 sophomore effort, The Execution of All Things, and commanded a passionate early following, playing hundreds of shows throughout the early 2000s.

Thanks both to Lewis’ contributions to supergroup The Postal Service, and Sennett and Boesel’s popular side project The Elected, as well tours with the likes of Bright Eyes and Coldplay and film and TV placements, Rilo Kiley attracted a broad swath of attention in the mid-2000s, with 2004’s More Adventurous, released through an imprint of Warner Bros., producing several popular singles, like “Portions for Foxes,” and helping the band reach a more mainstream audience. 2007’s Under the Blacklight would mark another critical and commercial success, but would ultimately become their final album, with 2008 marking Rilo Kiley’s last tour, with a formal announcement of a breakup in 2013, following several years of inactivity.

The band spent the 2010s involved in various other projects, with Lewis notably continuing on with a successful solo career, as well as participating in two Postal Service reunions, among other projects, but Rilo Kiley’s legacy has only seemingly become more beloved and celebrated over the years. Given all of the millennial nostalgia of late, it was no huge surprise when, finally, the band plotted a long-awaited reunion earlier this year, appearing at the Just Like Heaven Festival and releasing a compilation of career-spanning, band-selected tracks, That’s How We Choose To Remember It, before embarking on this full-on reunion tour.

What’s next remains to be seen (everyone involved seems elated to be back though, so fingers crossed for more shows and maybe even new music), but, for now, we’re just thrilled to have a chance to see this iconic group back together once more! If you’ve ever wanted to see them, especially in Nashville, this is a show you absolutely cannot miss, and tickets are still available here (with some stellar resale deals, as of writing) while they last!

Rilo Kiley and The Faint perform tonight, Sept. 23 at The Pinnacle. The show is all ages, begins at 8 p.m. (doors at 7 p.m.), and tickets are available for $80.10-128.04.
