Formed more than 25 years ago in Concord, North Carolina, and helmed by brothers Scott and Seth Avett, The Avett Brothers found a passionate early following throughout the ’00s, before shooting to mainstream attention by the end of the decade, becoming certifiable stars, festival headliners, and one of the preeminent fixtures in modern folk throughout the 2010s, heralded for their energetic live shows and engaging sound. On the complete opposite side of the musical spectrum, legendary west coast vocalist Mike Patton first rose to prominence in the ’80s and ’90s fronting experimental rock outfit Mr. Bungle and, even more famously, alt metal trailblazers Faith No More, two immensely influential and beloved bands, going on to release solo work and collaborate and front a variety of other projects over the decades, including Nashville supergroup Tomahawk.
Talented as they are, the Avetts aren’t the first collaborators who come to mind when you think of someone like Patton (who’s worked with everyone from Bjork to The Melvins to The Dillinger Escape Plan), but the two artists caught us by surprise last fall, when they announced a team up, called AVTT/PTTN. The supergroup released their eponymous debut (which lands more on the Avetts’ side of folky and introspective, than Patton’s more oddball and heavy) not long after, appearing on The Tonight Show and at a special Grammy Museum event in support, and recently made their full concert debut at Knoxville’s Big Ears Festival. They’ll soon kick off a tour as well, making their Nashville debut April 11 at The Pinnacle. Whether you’re a fan of either half of this supergroup or both, this is such a weird and cool merging of musical sensibilities, and a project whose longevity is totally unclear. Meaning, you should catch ’em this time around, because it’s hard to say when you might have another chance.
Tickets are available right here while they last, but we’re thrilled to announce that we’re also giving away a pair of tickets to one lucky fan! Preview the project and enter for a chance to win below.
