Hailing originally from Greenville, SC, though now based here in Nashville, blues and southern rocker Marcus King has been immersed in music basically since birth; the son of blues artist Marvin King (and grandson of blues artist William Morris King), with whom he began performing as a pre-teen. Forging a sound he describes as “soul-influenced psychedelic Southern rock,” Marcus began to pursue his own career more seriously as a teen, even dropping out of high school to make music full-time, and forming the Marcus King Band, releasing debut Soul Insight in 2015. Eponymous followup The Marcus King Band, produced by the great Warren Haynes, would arrive the following year, when King was just 20, and really propelled the genre-bending rocker and his group (whose lineup has seen some changes over the years) to wider attention, with press labeling him a new young blues phenom. 2018 third album Carolina Confessions was helmed by acclaimed Nashville producer Dave Cobb, and would mark the band’s last release for an extended period of time, as Marcus opted to go solo for awhile, recording a couple of albums with Dan Auerbach and one with Rick Rubin, and even landing a Grammy nomination along the way.
After a few years flexing his solo chops, King, now 30 and married, opted to finally get the band back together last year, releasing their first Marcus King Band LP in seven years, and fourth overall, called Darling Blue. Currently on their latest leg of touring in support, King and co. are set to play their first full headlining Nashville show in awhile on May 27 at Municipal Auditorium, along with classic country and Americana rising talent Willow Avalan, and Atlanta rock, funk, and soul outfit Penelope Road.
