Formed initially as high schoolers in Los Angeles, indie pop group Atta Boy released their first album, Out of Sorts, after their first year of college in 2012, not expecting it to reach many people outside of their immediate friends and family. To their surprise, though, the project managed to grow and find a wider audience, even if, at the time, the band wasn’t really a full-time focus for its members- vocalist and guitarist Eden Brolin (yes, that Brolin family), keyboard player Dashel Thompson, guitarist and bassist Freddy Reish, and drummer Lewis Pullman (yes, the one who’s an Avenger now). It would be another eight years before the quartet reconvened for genre-shifting sophomore effort Big Heart Manners, amidst the pandemic in 2020, marking a triumphant return, and finding some new momentum, which has seen the band become a lot more active this decade.
2022 would mark reflective and nostalgic third album Crab Park, further commanding buzz and leading to the band’s first proper tour, more a decade after releasing their debut LP, which saw them play Nashville for the first time in the fall of 2024, at The Basement East, returning a year later to headline The Basement and support CAAMP at Ascend Ampitheater. The fuzzy, indie pop and folk-tinged band’s latest and fourth album, Silt, arrived back in June, and is Atta Boy’s most emotionally resonant, layered, and sonically refined work yet, feeling like something of a mature culmination of their 15+ year journey making music togther, and marking a stellar time to check this group out if they’ve eluded you so far. In support, Atta Boy will return to town Sept. 10, to headline Eastside Bowl with local alt/indie project Texino.
