Ethereal Indie Rockers Copeland Play Intimate Show at The Blue Room with Jenny Dee, Tonight, Oct. 2

It’s been a minute since we last wrote about indie rock outfit Copeland, who initially formed in Lakeland, Florida 25 years ago, and now partially count Nashville as home. Fronted by Aaron Marsh, Copeland quickly gained a cult following for their lush, sad, and earnest 2003 debut Beneath Medicine Tree, and picked up broader critical and commercial traction with their more upbeat and slick 2005 sophomore effort In Motion. Combining soaring melodies, alt rock and emo bite, indie-pop sensibilities, and deeply personal, earnest lyricism, the group maintained a passionate following through subsequent efforts Eat, Sleep, Repeat and You Are My Sunshine, before initially splitting up in 2010.

That hiatus proved short-lived, though, as the band reemerged in 2014 with a great new album, Ixora, and the core lineup of Marsh, along with brothers Bryan and Stephen Laurenson, touring intermittently throughout the latter 2010s, and regrouping for ethereal sixth album Blushing, in 2019. One of the band’s more fascinating post-reunion endeavors was a hometown concert in 2018, backed by Lakeland’s Imperial Symphony Orchestra. That exercise in reimagining their material with symphonic backing became an ongoing project, ultimately resulting in 2022’s Nashville-recorded Revolving Doors, which features reimagined versions of some of their greatest hits with a full orchestra as its centerpiece, which they performed at nearby venue The Caverns, with Sewanee Symphony Orchestra, in 2022.

More recently, the trio celebrated 10 years of Ixora at the Schermerhorn and 20 years of Beneath Medicie Tree at The Basement East, and supported Anberlin last year at Brooklyn Bowl, but their latest return to Music City marks the group’s most intimate Nashville show in many years, tonight, Oct. 2 at The Blue Room at Third Man Records, with Chicago singer-songwriter Jenny Dee. Boasting a mix of recent music and old favorites (and perhaps a new song or two, from an in-the-works new album), this performance feels like an absolute must-see for any longtime Copeland fan, or fans of 2000s emo-informed alt rock in general. Tickets are still available right here while they last; don’t miss out!

Copeland and Jenny Dee perform tonight, Oct. 2 at The Blue Room. The show is all ages, begins at 8 p.m. (doors at 7 p.m.), and tickets are available for $37.98.
