Bonnaroo 2026 Artist Spotlight: Freddie Gibbs & The Alchemist

Bonnaroo Artist | Freddie Gibbs & The Alchemist
Bonnaroo History | 2015 (Freddie Gibbs), 2011 & 2018 (The Alchemist, with Eminem)
Stage & Time | Saturday | That Tent | 12:50-2:05am

Like we’ve been doing for many years now, we’re making it our mission to help you get acquainted with many of our favorite acts from Bonnaroo‘s 2026 lineup. A pivotal year for the fest, this summer’s ‘Roo will see some significant changes after last year’s unfortunate rainout, including infrastructure improvements, a scaled-back capacity, and a smaller lineup (notably, cutting down Thursday’s programming the most). We’ll have to wait until we’re on the farm to feel the full extent of the changes and tweaks, but we’re cautiously optimistic that it will benefit the fest in the long-term, especially in helping make the site more resistant to weather. This will be Bonnaroo’s 23rd installment and 25th anniversary, and even with a more compact lineup, it packs a pretty stellar, eclectic slate of artists, per usual. Back once again in its dependable June 11-14 timeframe, we’re counting down the days until another great weekend on the farm.

As we dig through the entire schedule, we’ll highlight a spread of performers spanning across genres and stages, big and small, new and old, to bring you some of the most interesting, lesser-known, and most highly-recommended among this year’s crop of artists. And as our time at ‘Roo approaches, we’ll also be bringing you some special features and full list-style daily lineup guides, to help you plan your weekend ahead of the fest. While these previews won’t span every artist, and might omit some more obvious must-see acts, we hope they’ll serve as a way to help you navigate Bonnaroo’s gargantuan lineup, and to make the most of your busy weekend at the fest! Be sure to grab your tickets (available in weekend or single-day, with various upgrade levels and add-ons) and camping or parking pass (also available with a lot of flexible options and levels), and read on for our Bonnaroo Artist Spotlight!

As we mentioned when writing about the Clipse, this year’s Bonnaroo lineup leaves a little something to be desired in the hip hop department, but, thankfully, what’s lacking in quantity is made up for in quality, especially for fans of real, nostalgic, deep, and alternative hip hop. And for that, look no further than Freddie Gibbs & The Alchemist, a duo who aren’t strictly a full-time group, but who’ve made some absolutely transcendent collaborative records together over the years. Hailing from Gary, Indiana, technically gifted and lyrically profound rapper Gibbs found some early success through a series of mixtapes in the 2000s, ahead of a more visible and resonant series of mixtapes, collaborations (supergroup P.O.C., teamups with Madlib), features, and solo albums throughout the 2010s, and eventually a major label deal and more solo success in the 2020s. The Alchemist, conversely, hails from Beverly Hills, and found his way to hip hop as an act of youthful suburban rebellion, initially trying his hand at rapping (in his group The Whooliganz) before gravitating to production in the late ’90s, earning his bona fides producing artists like Nas, Ghostface Killah, Snoop Dogg, Lil Wayne, and, more recently, Kendrick Lamar, and serving as Eminem’s touring DJ for the last 20 years. The Alchemist has also made several solo albums and even more collaborative records with artists like Prodigy, Armand Hammer, and Earl Sweatshirt since the mid-’00s, but his teamups with Freddie Gibbs have been some of the most legendary and acclaimed, pairing one of the most skilled and influential producers in modern hip hop with one of the scene’s most lyrically dense and multifaceted MCs. Though they’d been kicking ideas around since the early ’00s, Freddie first formally appeared on a song by The Alchemist and Curren$y, “Scottie Pippen,” in 2011, with the three going on to release a collaborative album, Fetti, in 2018. It was 2020’s Alfredo, though, that marked Freddie Gibbs & The Alchemist’s first release as a duo, attracting more visibility and critical acclaim than perhaps any work either artist had been involved with prior, and even earning the pair a Grammy nomination. Stylistic, cinematic, and full of high-profile guests, given the record’s success, it should come as no surprise that the duo teamed up once more for a sequel, Alfredo 2, last year, landing with just as much thoughtfulness, ambition, and sonic intensity, and once again met with universal acclaim. As stated, Freddie Gibbs & The Alchemist aren’t a full-time duo, and though they did tour together last year to promote the record, there’s no certainty that they’ll continue to do so regularly: that alone should make their late-night set essential viewing.
