Alexander Giannascoli, better known by his artist name Alex G, got his start playing in bands, before beginning to craft his own fiercely DIY solo music 15 years ago, while still in his teens. Alex quickly generated buzz and online attention for his early work, self-releasing a series of phenomenal early records before signing with Orchid Tapes ahead of fifth album DSU (the label subsequently re-released Alex’s preceding two records from 2012, Rules and Trick, the latter of which has become one of G’s most lauded works of all). Hailing from Pennsylvania, Giannascoli intimate, lo-fi, melodic, and intimate style was crafted alone in his bedroom, and even as he began to become a much more mainstream fixture in the second half of the 2010s, finding more commercial success for fifth album Beach Music, and collaborating and performing live with stars like Frank Ocean, he’s always managed to maintain that individualistic, earnest, small-scale sound that’s so uniquely his own.
Alex has continued to craft some incredible, sonically adventurous, and refreshingly distinct records over the last decade- most recently tenth LP Headlights, his major label debut through RCA- has scored two films for director Jane Schoenbrun (most recently last year’s masterful I Saw the TV Glow), has toured with big artists like Foo Fighters, worked in studio with the likes of Halsey, and has continued to tour and appear at festivals, met with bigger and more enthusiastic crowds than ever. No stranger to Music City (he played all the tiny clubs and DIY spots back in the day, before graduating most recently to Brooklyn Bowl, and even recorded a live album at Third Man back in 2018), Alex G is back in town tonight, Oct. 4, to headline The Ryman Auditorium in support of his new record. English indie singer Nilüfer Yanya will open, and only a handful of tickets remain here. We can’t think of a better-suited room than The Ryman to experience Alex’s earned and layered sound (brought to life with his great back band); don’t miss out!
Alex G and Nilüfer Yanya perform tonight, Oct. 4 at The Ryman Auditorium. The show is all ages, begins at 8 p.m. (doors at 7 p.m.), and tickets are available here.
