Singer, songwriter, producer, and performance artist Peaches exploded to fame with her transgressive, sex-positive, and attention-grabbing now-classic debut album, The Teaches of Peaches, in 2000, having recently relocated from her native Toronto to Berlin (where she’s largely remained since), after honing her sound in the late ’90s, and becoming a defining artist of the emerging electroclash scene, fusing synthpop, techno, punk, and performance art. Swiftly embraced for her unfiltered, queer, feminist, boundary-pushing, raunchy, and sociopolitically charged musical themes, and wild, theatrical live persona (and also, of course, subject of some controversy for her explicit nature), Peaches would release a host of fantastic subsequent LPs- 2003’s Fatherfucker, 2006’s Impeach My Bush, 2009’s I Feel Cream, and 2015’s Rub– experimenting with more punk-spirited and rock-leaning sounds, before gravitating more towards dance and electronic music, collaborating with legends like Iggy Pop, Joan Jett, Daft Punk, and Yoko Ono along the way, and releasing singles that would resonnate throghout the zeitgeist, like “Boys Wanna Be Her,” “Operate,” and, of course, the career-launching “Fuck the Pain Away.”
The subject of two acclaimed documentaries, director of numerous videos, occasional actor, co-curator of a photo book about her life, responsible for an electro-rock opera and a lauded one-woman show, Peaches is truly a multifaceted, groundbreaking, and one-of-a-kind artist, whose influence has been immeasurable (especially on modern, edgy, electronic and pop artists like Charli XCX). Now nearing 60, Peaches released her first album in more than a decade, No Lube So Rude, earlier this year, tackling themes of aging, bodily autonomy, and sexuality with all of the signature Peaches bombast, raw sexuality, and confidence. In support, the legendary artist is currently on tour, and Nashville-area residents have not one, but two extremely special chances to see her spectacular live show (which combines the visual aesthetic of bands like The Flaming Lips with the raw punk prowess of Iggy Pop) this week.
The first (and closest for locals) is tonight, Sept. 16 at The Blue Room at Third Man Records- a somewhat last-minute show announcement (she’d previously been set to play Cannery Hall), in a space that feels especially intimate for her wild, interactive, prop and costume-filled show- only a handful of tickets remain here. The second, on Sept. 18, is at The Caverns in nearby Pelham (around 90 minutes from Music City), where Peaches will literally perform underground in a cave, at one of the most unique show spaces in existence. Wheelchair Sports Camp will open (unclear if there’s an opener at The Blue Room), and tickets are available here. You can’t go wrong with either or both, but don’t miss a chance to see this incredible, legendary artist live!
