For gamers and music fans of a certain age, if you asked what single video game soundtrack had the most impact on their musical taste, a whole lot of them (the ones who didn’t say Guitar Hero anyway) would answer Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater. Not only responsible for broadening the appeal of skate culture to a whole generation of teens in the late ’90s and ’00s, theTony Hawk games featured absolutely legendary soundtracks, chock-full of punk, alternative, ska, metal, and more, from both contemporary and classic artists. Perhaps as instrumental as cultural touchstones like Warped Tour in boosting the mainstream appeal of punk in that era, the games live on (and have recently seen a series of re-releases) as iconic examples of video game soundtracks done perfectly.
It’s no surprise, then, that our friends at Nashville Is The Reason (responsible for punk DJ and emo nights, and tons of other cool events around town for more than a decade) and Mellow Rebel have been teaming up for a series of live music tributes to Tony Hawk in recent years, providing a perfect template for local artists to tackle legendary cover songs with a house backing band. The 3rd Annual Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater Tribute is happening this Friday, June 5 at The Basement East, and in addition to familiar covers, will feature game consoles and a project screen, for maximum Tony Hawk nostalgia.
The lineup is absolutely stacked with some of the best artists in the local alternative, indie, punk, pop rock, pop punk, hardcore, indie pop, alt pop, emo, grunge, and shoegaze scene, and many of the artists they’re covering have already been revealed as well, including: Lombardy performing Rage Against the Machine, Slow Shiv performing Ramones, Jack the Underdog performing Green Day, Stranger Boy performing Queens of the Stone Age and Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Foxies’ Julia Lauren performing Sex Pistols and Millencolin, The Far Between performing Thrice, MEGG performing The Distillers, Graveyard Kids performing Rancid and Avail, RIANE performing Johnny Cash and Jimmy Eat World, Stammer performing Alien Ant Farm, Valories performing The Bravery and New Politics, Echo Pilot performing Metallica and KISS, secondSELF performing Motorhead and Bad Religion, Semisweet performing Kittie and Jane’s Addiction, Fadewell performing Papa Roach, massie99 performing Goldfinger and Reel Big Fish, and more (including already-revealed surprise guest Jay Weinberg performing CKY and Metallica, and Lit’s Taylor Carroll performing Sex Pistols, Millencolin, and The Cult), backed by house band Brandon Bruce & Friends!
