Two of metal’s most legendary acts, England’s Judas Priest and Arizona’s Alice Cooper, are gearing up for a co-headlining summer tour, which brings them to nearby Franklin Sept. 21 at FirstBank Amphitheater! Formed in 1969 in Birmingham, Judas Priest spent their first decade honing their unique take on British heavy metal and enjoying early attention, before finding broader fame and massive commercial success following 1980 sixth LP British Steel. A huge influence on the hard rock and glam metal scene of the ’80s, both in their sound and their fashion sense, the band notched numerous hits and became a seminal mainstay of the metal explosion of that decade, releasing a prolific string of records and touring the world.

Alice Cooper, meanwhile, began as a frontman for Phoenix, Arizona-based hard rock band of the same name, which was mostly active in in the late ’60s to mid-’70s (but have returned intermittently, and reunited for a new album this year), before disbanding in ’75, and paving the way for Cooper (hailing from Detroit and born Vincent Furnier) to continue on as a solo artist under the same name. Leaning into shock rock, glam, and metal, Cooper’s solo career proved even bigger than his already-successful stint with the band, leading to huge hits throughout the ’70s and ’80s, and cementing him as another seminal figure in metal, albeit a different side of the scene than Judas Priest, known for his theatrical, shocking, and prop-filled live shows.

Both artists (but especially Cooper) have played Nashville fairly often over the years, but catching two metal and hard rock legends- two distinct but complimentary groups who’ve weathered metal’s rise and decline, and have continued to tour and release albums regularly for more than 50 years each- together at one show is a chance fans of classic metal don’t want to pass up! North Carolina stoner and southern metal outfit Corrosion of Conformity (who’ve been around since the ’80s and are legends in their own right) support, and tickets are still available here.
