Born Gunner Shepardson in Richmond, Virginia, and just 19-years-old as of last month, breakout rapper Nettspend got an impressively young start, raised in a musical household on a diverse range of influences, and drawn to making his own internet and skateboard culture-inspired rap while still in elementary school. After dropping out of high school his freshman year, following the pandemic lockdowns, Nettspend started getting more serious about making music and cultivating his image and lifestyle to match, debuting his first songs on Soundcloud in late 2022, and quickly attracting buzz throughout the following year, thanks to viral attention through Twitter and TikTok, nods from fellow artists like Xaviersobased, and even press from prestigious outlets like The Fader and The New York Times. Coasting on an immense amount of hype and aura, and boosted by early viral tracks and collaborations, as well as self-released 2023 debut mixtape Kickdoor, the thoroughly Gen Z phenom made his inaugural appearance at Rolling Loud in 2024 and inked a major label deal with Interscope, releasing his breakout mixtape Bad Ass F*cking Kid at the end of that year, which brought Nettspend even wider renown and even cracked the Billboard 200.
Boasting a thoroughly modern take on trap, and internet-derived micro-genre offshoots jerk and rage, Nettspend’s glitchy, dark, and etherial sound and vibe has made him both a popular and divisive new fixture in the hop hop scene, and his rise has been impressively swift. Last year, while working on his debut album, early life crisis (which saw a delay of almost 9 months, finally arriving last month), Shepardson continued to make live appearances, delved into the fashion world by walking the runway at Paris Fashion Week and appearing in a Vans ad, and saw his fanbase continue to rise, with tons of hype building ahead of his debut, which landed to plenty of online discourse- both positive and negative. Now in the midst of his first proper headlining tour in support, Nettspend will make his Nashville debut May 2 at Cannery Hall’s Mainstage.
