Formed a decade ago in Melbourne, Australia, pub rock and punk outfit Amyl and the Sniffers have really exploded to stardom in recent years, lauded for their wild, ferocious live show, and hailed as one of the most exciting new fixtures of the punk scene. Named for the recreational drug amyl nitrite (which Aussies call Amyl but Americans might known as poppers), the foursome- vocalist Amy Taylor, drummer Bryce Wilson, guitarist Dec Martens, and bassist Gus Romer (replacing short-tenured original bassist Calum Newton)- began making music in the house they shared together, self-releasing and self-recording early EPs Giddy Up and Big Attraction, earning them buzz throughout the flourishing 2010s punk scene on Australia’s eastern coast, and word of their raucous live show began to spread, and led to their first shows in North America and Europe. After signing with Rough Trade, the band would release their eponymous debut full-length in 2019, a brisk, propulsive fusion of pub rock, punk, garage rock, and glam- pulling from influences as diverse as Minor Threat, Dolly Parton, and AC/DC, and landing as a sort of callback to classic punk like The Stooges- which earned much wider international attention, and nabbed the band their first ARIA award (Australia’s answer to Grammys).
Just as their career was starting to explode, however, Covid put tour plans on hold, causing the band to hunker down back home and begin work on their fantastic sophomore album, 2021’s Comfort to Me, a bigger, heavier, more cohesive and emotionally resonant work, which earned critical acclaim and further boosted the rockers’ profile, leading to shows with the likes of Weezer, Smashing Pumpkins, and Foo Fighters. And 2024 third album Cartoon Darkness once again drew widespread acclaim, retaining the band’s punchy punk bite and edginess, while taking some bolder, bigger sonic swings. Now gracing festival stages, selling out shows worldwide, and being mentioned in conversations with all-time punk greats, Amyl have most definitely secured their legacy as one of the best and most important rock bands of the decade- and, as we can attest from their last Nashville show last year, one of the most essential live acts in the world right now.
Most recently, the band announced a concert film Truth or Consequence, and an accompanying live album (due out Sept. 4), and are gearing up for another small run of U.S. shows between appearances at ACL. Even though they just played Music City last year, and Bonnaroo this summer, we’re fortunate that Nashville fell within that southern tour route once again, with the Amyl slated to headline brand new venue The Truth on Oct. 6!
